MAGAZINE COVER ANALYSIS
SCREAM
Choosing an appropriate font and font colour for a magazine cover is extremely important, this magazine called "scream" is a horror magazine which focuses on horror films and series.
People will see this magazine and will instantly recognise the style of font and colour and what the designers are grying to portray to them. The font chosen gives the impression of blood dripping off of the letters, which helps relate the ,again to horror. The designers of the magazine have also decided to make the font red, this lets the audience know that the liquid dripping off the text is blood. If the designers had chosen the colour green, it still would have been scary as green can be related to slime and horror but not as scary as red. At the top of the magazine there is a slogan, it reads "BLOOD, GUTS, GORE AND MORE" this slogan is catchy and catches the readers attention as it is in capital letters, therefore standing out. The placement of the slogan is also important as they have placed it next to the title of the magazine which is the first thing people look at, so the slogan will not go unnoticed. The black text on the white background allows the text to stand out from the background, it helps to lift the text and make it stand out so the reader is able to see it better. |
EMPIRE
On this magazine cover the Empire have used their iconic bold red font for the title this will instantly catch peoples eye. There is also other fonts that are bold and in yellow this is used to highlight the sub titles that are most important.
The main topic of this issue is harry potter this is made clear by the front cover as it has all of the relevant characters from harry potter on it and the title is potter 7 in big bold writing. They match some of the writing on the cover with what is happening e.g "friendship shatters" this is illustrated by the shattered glass, there is also pictures of other characters in some of the shards. They also use sub headings to tell us what else is in the magazine. these headings on other films and topics are mostly for people that might not be interested in the main topic on the front cover in this case harry potter. |
TOTAL FILM |
This magazine, Total Film, demonstrates how to effectively use colours within the magazine. At the top of the magazine, a headline reads "10 coolest movies" this text has been given the colour blue in order to represent an icy feel to it, referring to it being "cool". This shows how important colour and words chosen are within a magazine.
Magazines put the main attraction on the front of the magazine cover in the center, this is so it gets noticed the most and people buy the magazine because of what is on the front. If the magazine decided to put something that is not as popular on the front cover then the magaizne would not get as much attention and probably wouldn't sell as many copies as people do not want to read about unpopular films. Another aspect of this magazine that I notice is that there is a lot of exlamation marks used. This has been used in order to draw attention towards the text and the magazine itself. Exlamation marks are used to give the effect of shouting, so exlamation marks within the magazine give the effect of importance to the reader. The use of capital letters on the cover also gives the effect of importance to the reader and helps to catch their eye. |
SFX
SFX is a film magazine, this magazine helps to demonstrate what makes a successul magazine cover. Making your magazine stand out from others is very important, and this magazine has used banners in order to make th text stand out and lift off of the magazine. This effect draws the attention of the audience towards the magazine and helps them to notice it. The banner behind the text allows people to see text more clearly.
Once again this magazine has used exlamation marks excessively throughout the cover in order to draw more attention towards and to also mark the importance of the text. The use of capital letters helps to make the text stand out as well, helping to catch the readers eye. The magazine has kept the same house style throughout the cover, choosing a small number of colours to use. If a wide range of colours is used then the magazine cover will look unprofessional and silly, it will not be aesthetically pleasing for customers, though it would catch their eye. So this magazine shows that it is important to keep a limited amount of colours and to keep it simplistic. A wide variety of images have been used in the magazine in order to give the reader something more pleasing to look at. A magazine cover ful of text and no picture would make the cover look very dull, boring and dawnting for the reader, putting them off from buying the magazine full stop. However it is important to have a balance within the magazine, this cover shows that perfectly as it has a decent amount of text within it but a fair few images in oder to complement it. |
