TRAILER INSPIRATIONS
When planning for our A2 trailer, we initially planned on using The Purge & Dexter as our main inspirations for our trailers premise, with similarities including home invasions, a singular killer and two or more victims.
When coming up with varying ways that we could use as torture methods for our trailer, we turned to looking at popular torture & gore themed horror films such as Hostel & Saw, and TV series' such as Dexter. |
INITIAL INSPIRATIONS
GORE / BLOOD & GUTS
Eg: Dexter, Hostel, Saw
Naturally, we sought after popular horror films that are well known for their gore & torture aesthetics, as these will be the primary sub-genre's of our A2 trailer. The following three, as stated before, took the prominent place as inspiration for our our trailer "Last Aid".
DEXTERThe killings in Dexter tend to differ as each kill occurs, with Dexter using different tools & methods to both torture & kill his victims. We gained inspiration from this as we are planning to use various methods of torture.
|
HOSTELThe Hostel films feature a mass amount of creative ways to brutally disfigure someone, be it eating a mans leg while he lays awake, or the below video. We naturally gained inspiration from Hostel, and the similar Saw film series.
|
HOME INVASION
Eg: The Purge, The Strangers,
Scream
Aside from our trailer prominently being based around a torture & gore theme, the aspect of Home Invasions will also be apparent, with the victims originally invading the killer's house, as well as the killer later invading others and/or more victims' houses.
THE PURGEWhen talking about Home Invasion horror films, The Purge is the first to come to mind as the films whole premise is based around invading other people's homes to then both physically & mentally taunt & eventually kill their victims.
|
SCREAMAlthough Scream's sub-genre is primarily Slasher, the films Opening Title Sequence features one of the best home invasions in film. Throughout the whole OTS the viewer is left intrigued & captivated by the terrifying premise.
|
SUSPENSE & THRILLER
Eg: Alien, Halloween, Jaws
Suspense & thriller is very prominent in most, if not all horror films. When planning for our trailer, we didn't want to just create a torture=porn premise like Hostel or Wrong Turn, but for ours to be slightly more accessable to wider ranges of audience via having sections where tense & quiet scenes occur; For example, the victims have escaped briefly & the killer is hunting them.
ALIENThe below scene in the original Alien, when the film originally released, was terrifying and completely unexpected. This is the type of terror & thrill we are looking to recreate in our trailer, when for example the killer is torturing his victims.
|
JAWSJaws is naturally well known for it's insane suspense & dragged out scenes keeping viewers on edge throughout it all. This is the type of suspense we are looking to recreate in our trailer, when for example a tense & quiet chase is occurring.

FUTURE INSPIRATIONS
DOLLS & MANNEQUINS
Eg: Silent Hill, Tourist Trap, The Conjuring
A developed & refined idea of ours was to include mannequins instead of real people to act as specific, but dead, characters. When we had access to our Mac again we researched popular horror films which had prominently used mannequins and/or dolls as the main premise in said film.
SILENT HILL (REVELATION)Silent Hill has a notorious history of using mannequins as a threat, in both the video games & films. The below scene shows how Silent Hill's mannequins are used unlike no other, taking their human-like aesthetic to a whole new level.
|
SAWThe killer in Saw uses a puppet, named Jigsaw/Billy, to be a visual tool for his victims to see portraying the information for his 'games'. We like the idea of our killer using mannequins as a tool for his torture, but also as a mental stability.
|
'Video Games'
Eg: Outlast, Dead Space, Until Dawn
Not only do horror films inspire & drive creators, as well as gain inspiration from other sources of media, but horror-themed video games feature scenes far more brutal & tense than some horror films do even today. This is naturally due to video games having no limit as to how far they can explore with torture & gore, whereas in film there may be limits due to budget and/or lack of ability from the film creators.
OUTLAST
The main inspiration for our killer derived form this scene, where we've also gained inspiration for a torture method we will use in our trailer, Home Sweet Home.
|
OUTLAST: WHISTLEBLOWERThis section in Outlast had both genders squirming, as a psycho man looking for love desires to physically 'transform' the protagonist into a woman. We hope to recreate this 'audience-reaction' with viewers raising their hands to their face. Furthermore, the player is forced to watch throughout the whole scene.
|
DEAD SPACEThis intense section of Dead Space was near unbearable to many people, being forced to personally control a large surgical needle gradually getting closer to the protagonists eye. We hope to recreate the tense & unbearable feel of watching something so cringe-like & fragile, particularly the human eye. Below is the aftermath if one fails.
|
UNTIL DAWNThis section of Until Dawn is crafted in an attempt to trick the audience, as the player/viewer is positive that nothing negative or fatal will occur (due to the events leading up to this scene). We are looking to recreate this sense of tenseness, followed by brief ease, further followed by either a jump scare or the unexpected.
